Big risk in pursuing amateur repairs and cover up services for fine woodwork and furniture
When illustrating the value of hiring a professional woodworking expert, we often explain to our clients the two options for woodwork repair and refinishing.
We refer to it as “painter” grade repair vs. furniture grade service.
Within professional furniture grade restoration service there are 3 levels, or price points:
- Touch up: The most affordable. Involves repairs, and blending areas, but not stripping entire surfaces.
- Refinishing: Considerably more expensive. A complete strip, repair, and refinish of wood surfaces.
- Full Replacement: The most expensive.
Recently, we lost a bid for applying our touch up service at a local synagogue. They went with a painter’s estimate, which was noticeably less than our touch up service quote – which is our lowest price service.
Without revealing too many details, the lower budget paint techniques were the wrong approach. The damages and imperfections were still noticeable. Faded areas were not properly blended, so the color variations still shown through. The flaws were very much visible and obvious even after the job was complete.
When they come back to us, they were prepared to undo the mistake with OFS touch up services. Unfortunately, it was too late. We could not unfix the painter’s work. Touch up was no longer an option. The client was now faced with either refinishing or paying for full replacement to achieve the quality atmosphere they wished to project to their worshippers.
