The renowned Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts in Hartford, Connecticut, is one of the most beautiful and most notable theatres in New England. It was built by Dotha Bushnell Hillyer as a memorial to her father, the Reverend Dr. Horace Bushnell, and it opened on January 13, 1930. Its unique architecture, designed by the same firm that designed Radio City Music Hall, contrasts a traditional Georgian Revival exterior with a rich Art Deco interior. Much of that interior is adorned with ornate brass fixtures and railings as well as hand-carved woodwork, and all of it requires proper care to maintain. OFS Corporation’s knowledgeable staff is responsible for providing that care.
Managing this prestigious facility is the job of Servus Management Corporation, which was hired in 2002 to oversee the restoration of the property to its original Art Deco glory. Servus Management selected OFS to clean and restore the Bushnell’s brass and woodwork. “They have lots of brass, including all the handrails and brass doors,” said Peggy McKenzie, Vice President at Servus Management. “OFS didn’t just clean and polish it. They came up with a maintenance program that saves the Bushnell time and money. Their technology keeps the brass looking shiny and keeps
fingerprints under control.”
The Bushnell is especially pleased with the work OFS did in their luxurious Seaverns Room. This colonial-style room is available for weddings, receptions, and high-level corporate events, and it features intricate, hand-carved antique woodwork. Servus Management trusted OFS to restore this wood to its former beauty, and they were not disappointed. “OFS knew how to maintain wood of that quality. They advised us about what coatings should and shouldn’t be used, and they restored the look of the wood and protected it against the room’s dry atmosphere,” McKenzie said.
After more than 80 years, the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts remains a jewel among Hartford landmarks, and OFS is proud to play a part in maintaining the timeless beauty that Bushnell patrons expect.
